Disclaimer:
The Fullertons — this iteration, at least — broke up years ago.
But the spirit lives on. So if you 'd like to know more about Neon Leon's life and legacy, let us know. We're your one-stop-shop for all things Fullerton. Just drop us a line here.
A rumor in his own time:
The waters of American music run mighty and deep, and few recording artists have paddled as many of its tributaries as “Neon” Leon Fullerton. His brother, Lionel, has called him “the Zelig of American music” — a shape-shifting witness and contributor to genres as wide-ranging as blues, garage rock, country, folk, mountain, zydeco, Tex-Mex, bluegrass, surf, jazz, jug, and soul.
The Portland, Maine-based Fullertons, who disbanded in 2018, were dedicated to reviving the memory and celebrating the spirit of Neon Leon through the music that he wrote, that inspired him, and that he inspired.
Said The Portland Phoenix: “Fullerton is a quasi-mythical figure. He may have had a deep reverence for early blues, Americana, and R&B; or he may never have existed.” (Even Fullerton called himself “an ugly roomer in my own time.”)
The Phoenix might have some Fullerton Deniers embedded in its staff, but Believers know better. In the words of biographer and noted plagiarist Rex Geronomo: “Yes, Virginia, there is a Neon Leon. Wherever the moonshine lights up the sunshine, wherever low life is living the high life, wherever the heartbeat of the heartlands synchopates a blue tattoo on the drumhead of desire, wherever the lost and lonely find reason to grin and bear it and Masters of the Universe wonder who keyed their SUVs, Neon Leon is there."

"Mass market nostalgia gets us hopped up for a past that never existed. Hagiography sanctifies shuck-and-jive politicians and reinvents their expedient gestures as moments of great moral weight. Our continuing narrative line is blurred past truth and hindsight. Only a reckless verisimilitude can set that line straight."
James Ellroy "The truth. Maybe it's an archaic concept these days, but I live by it. I've given my word to the people of this city that the Planet will always report the truth. No matter the risk. Somebody has to take a stand." Perry White "Some call them criminals, some call them fine folks, some call them history, some call them a hoax." Leon Fullerton |
